I don’t know what life is like for you right now, but life around my house is like a runaway bullet train.
My kids are older, both are teenagers; and between the homeschooling, online work, Bible studies, housework, church responsibilities, and all the rest – I feel like I can’t catch my breath.
There are weeks that go by when I don’t have even one day to put my feet up and rest.
The craziest part of all is that we live in a culture where that is considered normal; and not having a day off from the crazy train for many is not odd.
Especially if you have kids.
Normal is working 5-6 days a week and spending all of your free time driving kids to sports practice, music lessons, gymnastics, and dance class.
There is no time to rest.
This is especially detrimental for believers because this fast-paced, hurried life leaves no time for spiritual growth.
Can I tell you something?
Spiritual growth doesn’t happen in sound bytes and one-minute Bible passages because God doesn’t communicate in sound bytes and two-paragraph devotionals.
Spiritual growth demands that we set aside both quality and quantity time to get alone with God, in His presence, to hear His voice.
But not just hear His voice, but to meditate on His words, allow them to penetrate our hearts, and change the way we think, act, and behave.
Jesus illustrated this for us in His parable of the sower. There were 4 types of soil: packed earth, rocky, thorny, and soft, plowed dirt.
- Our hearts get packed down from the amount of traffic we allow in every day,
- Disappointment and disillusionment cause us to build walls in our hearts,
- Our busyness and efforts to create a dream life here prevent us from having the time for God like we want…
All of these prevent spiritual growth in our lives because they don’t allow the seed of God’s Word to sink down deep and take root and grow in our lives.
Growth takes time; it needs tending to, it needs cultivating.
Spiritual growth requires solitude, it requires quiet meditation on God’s Word, it requires time set aside specifically to sit in God’s presence enjoying Him, listening to Him, and speaking with Him.
And He is calling us to slow down, to remember those things that have eternal importance and value, and invest in those things.
That is why, this fall, I am intentionally choosing to slow down to study God’s Word.
Note: This year Courtney is leading Life Rythmns that Bring Rest, and if you have planned to do that study with her, I invite you to do that.
Many of you know, I – along with 8 other amazing ladies – lead Good Morning Girls – Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia. This means that we translate all of the Good Morning Girls materials for each study.
When we were preparing to do this year’s Making Your Home a Haven, our translation team was very small and we were not able to translate the materials on time.
Thank the Lord, He has since sent us a handful of ladies who have agreed to join our translation team so we will be able to study right alongside Courtney going forward.
But for this year’s Making Your Home a Haven study, we chose to do this one again.
