Who Are Your Giants?

As many of you know, I am on the leadership team for Good Morning Girls and lead the Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian chapter. Have you ever asked yourself, “Why did David choose 5 smooth stones when he only needed one?”

In 2 Samuel 21, we see that David didn’t choose those 5 stones by accident, or in case he missed Goliath the first time. He didn’t choose those 5 stones for no reason.

Actually, we can conclude that the Bible chooses to mention these minor details, like “five smooth stones”, and not “David picked up a few stones” or “David picked up some stones”, because later it will reveal the reason.

When we studied in 1 Samuel, we saw that David used one of those stones to kill Goliath.

And he had 4 stones left over.

Why?

Yet again there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to the giant. So when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David’s brother, killed him. These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

Goliath had 4 brothers.

I believe that when David chose those five stones, he had no idea that Goliath had four brothers, but God knew and immediately prepared him for victory.

Everyone of us has our “giants” with whom we must fight, and God has already prepared us for victory. Actually, God has already won the battle! We just need to go forward in the faith and power of the Holy Spirit, knowing that we are already victorious in the name of Jesus Christ!

But there was another “giant” in David’s life

David killed all five of the giants of Gath, but an enemy – Satan – blinded him from seeing a sixth “giant”.

That giant was immorality.

In 2 Samuel 11, we read the well-known tale of David and Bathsheba. While David was walking on the roof his house, he saw Bathsheba bathing. He was attracted to her and sent his servant to bring her to him.

We know that he was aware that she was married, because in the 3rd verse it says, “So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someonesaid, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”

Nevertheless, the servant brought her to David and he slept with her.

And from there arose a huge problem, Bathsheba became pregnant.

Her husband was i battle. When the baby was born, he would know that it wasn’t his and Bathsheba would tell him everything, David had a huge problem on his hands.

Remember, she didn’t come to David. The Bible says, “Then David sent messengers, and took her…”

This wasn’t some huge, steamy affair between David and Bathsheba. Women didn’t have their own rights. He was the king and you do what the king commands or you die.

In order to hide his sin, David came up with a plan. Uriah must die! Bathsheba must become his wife!

We know how the story ends. David sends Uriah to his death in battle, he takes Bathsheba to be his wife and God, through the prophet, reveals David’s sin.

We all know someone who has fallen into great sin.

I am sure you are thinking of someone right now who has fallen into the trap of sin.

Lately we have read dozens of stories of Pastors and Christian leaders who have fallen into sin, one after another, and mainly in the area of sexual immorality.

When we read these stories, they shock us. But one thing is for certain…

They didn’t fall into sin overnight.

A powerful man doesn’t just fall, only when he has an unseen area of weakness in his life.

In every case, we find out later that for years he had been harboring hidden sin in his life, sin that over many years had grown and spread. But all we saw was the fruit of that sin.

And that’s what we see in David’s story here.

While we don’t know where or how that sin began in his life, we read in 2 Samuel 11:1, “It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.”

Where should David have been?

Not in Jerusalem!

Rather than going to war…in a times when kings go out to battle, he sent Joab and his servants and all Israel. Everyone that should have gone, went – but David stayed hom.

Why? We don’t know, but if there had been a good reason for him to stay in Jerusalem, surely the Bible would have told us.
