In my previous post about Bible verses that talk about sanctification, we looked at what sanctification is and what it means to us as Christians.

Sanctification and holiness in the life of a believer are not optional.

God doesn’t just recommend being sanctified and living holy as a good idea for a Christian. No, it is a command, and a command that we see repeated in the New Testament.

In the Old Testament, we see the command to be holy because God is holy.

The Hebrew word holy is quadosh, which means set apart for sacred use. We see this same command in the New Testament, using the Greek counterpart hagios.

Paul talked about holy living in Romans 6, when he asked the rhetorical question, “What shall we say, then, shall we continue to live in sin that grace may abound?”

He went on to talk about the fact that as believers, we should be dead to sin.

In other words, just as a dead person cannot be led into drugs, alcohol, or pornography, we should not be led into sin because that part of our nature died with Christ on the cross.

We now have a new nature.

A holy nature.

A nature that desires to live in a way that is pleasing to God.

Living sanctified lives – lives that are set apart for holy use, and not to be engaged in sinful practices – is so serious to God, that the writer of Hebrews has this to say:

Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

Hebrews 10:29

Jesus’ blood cleansed us from sin.

But that was not all. When His blood cleansed us from sin, it simultaneously put a stamp, or a trademark, on our lives that marked us for special use only!

We are no longer for common use.

Therefore, we are called to live in a way that is remarkably different than those around us. We are not supposed to blend in.

We are called to stand out!

And this is so serious to God that he says there is a punishment for those who were once marked with His trademark but then go out and purposely and intentionally sin — because it:

  • Tramples Christ – like mud or animal dung
  • Considers Christ’s blood to be common – the very thing that consecrates us
  • Insults the Holy Spirit

This is a very serious matter.

Paul had this to say:

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

We used to do those things: but we have been washed now. We are sanctified now – stamped, trademarked for special use.

Now we no longer do those things, because we have a special purpose.

Being holy, being sanctified, is not a good suggestion. It is a command from God, and that is why I put together this list of Bible verses for us to memorize and meditate on.

We have to remind ourselves of who we are!

It is very easy to get caught up in life here on earth, the daily grind, the temptation to love the things the world loves.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 john 2:15

We have to continually renew our mind, cleanse it, and remind ourselves that we have another purpose.

A holy purpose!
