What is the current temperature in your home?
I don’t mean where your thermostat is set, but what people sense when they walk in your front door. Do they feel love and warmth, or do they feel cold and on edge?
I want to stress that this post isn’t just for wives and mothers, this post is for women of all walks of life – because as women (whether or not we’re married and have children), we create the atmosphere of our home.
Like that classic saying, “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”.
For many years, my daily prayer has been that when people walk in my home that they feel the presence of Jesus.
I can say with certainty that this hasn’t always happened. I know that there have been times when a neighbor has walked in my door and sensed the frustration of my day rolling off me like giant waves.
Because, dear sister, what is in our heart flows out of us and affects all those in our home. It literally sets the spiritual thermostat of our home. It creates a harmonious or a discordant tone.
Is your heart at rest?
Is it full and satisfied?
Or is it longing for something you can’t put your finger on…because everything you’ve tried so far hasn’t worked? If this is you, Jesus wants to give you the very thing that will satisfy you so deeply that you will never have to search for satisfaction again.
How to Create a Worshipful Atmosphere In Your Home
We read in John 4 that Jesus left Judea for Galilee. In verse 4 it says, “But He needed to go through Samaria”.
Here’s the thing: Samaria was not on His way to Galilee. It’s like saying, I need to go from Oregon to Idaho via Texas.
There is no route from Oregon to Idaho with a stop in Texas, unless you plan to go way out of your way!
And that is what this trip looked like. Jesus went out of His way to go to Samaria while traveling from Judea to Galilee.
But the verse says, “He needed to go through Samaria”.
Of course He did! He had a divine appointment there with a woman who was thirsty. Very, very thirsty.
Not only was she physically thirsty, because she drew water at the hottest part of the day to avoid the other women who despised her very immoral lifestyle, she had another kind of thirst.
She was thirsty for love.
She had a deep longing to feel loved, which is why she had married and divorced 5 times and was now shacking up with a 6th guy.
No one knows why she’d married and divorced so many times, but something is definitely clear: either she didn’t know how to pick a guy, or they all fell for the wrong girl.
And both are probably correct!
But one thing is for certain: there was a deep, deep longing inside of her crying out to be satisfied and nothing she’d tried until now had worked.
Every guy she married left her thirsty for something she couldn’t put her finger on.
And here she is at the well, drawing water when Jesus shows up and promises her water that will leave her so satisfied that she’ll never have to drink again.
Not physical water – soul water.
And Jesus is still offering this water to quench our soul thirst.

- Food
- Adrenaline rushes
- Alcohol
- Cigarettes
- Holistic living
- Hygge
- Sex
- Drugs
There are so many wells people go to in failed attempts to quench that soul thirst. And these things do work…for a moment. Just like a glass of water will quench our parched throat on a hot summer day for a moment.
But when that moment passes, we’re left thirsty again.
And pretty soon, that thing that satisfied us in that moment doesn’t really satisfy anymore. We need something more…and more…and more.
And we wake up one day feeling just like that woman at the well.
We have a string of failed attempts at satisfaction behind us and now we’re tangled up in a humiliating situation because we had to try something extreme — and even that didn’t work!
And no matter how extreme we get, we’ll be left with the shattered pieces of our failed attempts scattered around us — still soul thirsty for something we can’t put our finger on.
There is only one thing that can satisfy our soul thirst.
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance.” Isaiah 55:1-2
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
