Have you ever felt like grief was crushing the air out of your lungs?
- Maybe you’ve lost someone you love.
- Maybe you’re grieving a dream that never came true.
- Maybe you’re walking through the end of a marriage, a broken friendship, infertility, chronic illness, or another painful loss that few people truly understand.
Grief has a way of making us feel isolated. It whispers that no one sees our pain and that things will never get better.
But grief is not a sign of weak faith.
Throughout Scripture, we see godly men and women mourn deeply. Even Jesus wept.
The good news is that we never grieve alone.
When our hearts are broken, and we don’t know what to pray, God’s Word reminds us that He is near, that He sees every tear, and that He promises hope beyond our pain.
If you are grieving today, these comforting Bible verses can help anchor your heart in God’s promises and remind you that even in your darkest moments, God has not abandoned you.
Below, you’ll find 10 powerful Bible verses for grief, along with a free printable set of Scripture cards that you can keep nearby whenever waves of sorrow begin to overwhelm you.

What Does the Bible Say About Grief?
Many Christians wonder:
- Is it wrong to grieve?
- Why does loss hurt so deeply?
- Does God understand my pain?
The Bible never tells us to ignore grief.
In fact, Jesus Himself wept at the tomb of Lazarus.
Scripture shows us that grief is a normal response to loss, but it also reminds us that we do not grieve without hope.
Why God’s Word Brings Comfort During Loss
In the Bible, we read about loss and how great men and women of faith turned to God for comfort in those seasons.
The Psalms are filled with David’s cries to the Lord in times of sorrow and grief.
So many of the Psalms have given me great comfort throughout the years as I walked through my own losses.
Several years ago, as I walked through the loss of my best friend Mandy, I gathered these verses together and meditated on them.
They gave me the strength and comfort I needed to begin processing other losses left unaddressed and swept under the rug.
The miscarriages, friendships lost, chronic illness, and dreams that I had to let go.

As we read and meditate on the Word of God, the Holy Spirit – our Comforter – is able to take that Word and bring healing and reveal an eternal perspective that we need so that we can see life and its circumstances from God’s perspective.
So here are those Bible verses. At the bottom of this article, you’ll find a link for where you can download a free set of Bible verse cards with these verses on them.
