Have you ever felt like God gave you a promise… and then everything started moving in the opposite direction?
Maybe you’ve prayed.
Waited.
Trusted.
And yet nothing seems to be happening.
If anything, life feels harder than when God first placed that promise on your heart.
You’re not alone.

Throughout Scripture, God often gave His people incredible promises long before they saw them fulfilled.
“Adversity is normal in the life of a believer; defeat is abnormal.”
Pastor F. Dean Hackett
David is one of the clearest examples of this.
God anointed him king while Saul was still reigning.
Instead of immediately receiving the throne, David spent years running for his life.
Even after Saul died, David didn’t become king over all Israel overnight.
He refused to manipulate circumstances or force God’s promise to happen.
Instead, he trusted God’s timing.
David’s story reminds us that God’s promises often come with a season of preparation before they come with a season of fulfillment.
5 Ways to Strengthen Your Faith While Waiting on God’s Promises
Maybe you’re living in that same season right now.
Somewhere between God’s promise…and God’s fulfillment.
If so, don’t lose heart.
Scripture gives us several ways to strengthen our faith while we wait.
1. Study the great men and women of God in the Bible
Study the lives of people who waited well.
Almost every major figure in Scripture experienced a gap between God’s promise and its fulfillment.
Abraham.
Joseph.
Moses.
David.
Their stories remind us that God’s delays are often part of His preparation.
As you’re waiting on God’s promise, study great men and women of the Bible and learn from their example of trust, faithfulness to God, and His Word.
2. Meditate on the promises of scripture
Don’t spend all your time thinking about your promise.
Fill your heart with God’s promises.
As you’re waiting on the fulfillment of His promise to you, do a study of the promises of Scripture, keep a journal of them, and begin to daily pray through those promises as a way to strengthen your faith in God and His Word.
3. Focus on what God is doing in your life right now
It’s easy to become so focused on tomorrow that we completely miss what God is doing today.
The fact is that the path to the promise is just as important as the fulfillment of that promise because every step along the way is preparing us to live faithfully in that promise.
Take a step back and ask yourself, “What is God doing in my life right now?”
Take time to see His hand at work in your life, and then ask yourself, “How is this preparing me for His promise?”
Teach yourself to be daily aware of what God is doing now, so that you don’t become too focused on what will be in the future that you miss His hand right now.
4. Cultivate a heart of gratefulness in every season
Gratitude protects your heart while you’re waiting.
Discouragement grows where gratitude disappears.
Grab this My Thankful Journal and begin daily writing down five things you are grateful for, purposing to not repeat anything you’ve already written.
5. Develop a life of worship
Waiting becomes much easier when worship becomes your daily habit.
- Declare who He is
- Declare what He’s done
- Declare His greatness
- Declare His goodness, faithfulness, and love
God’s promises are never strengthened by our striving.
They’re strengthened by our trust.
David eventually became king—not because he forced God’s hand, but because he faithfully waited for God’s timing.
The same God who fulfilled His promises to David is still faithful today.
He hasn’t forgotten what He promised you.
Keep trusting.
Keep worshiping.
Keep studying His Word.
Keep thanking Him for what He’s doing today.
Because God’s delays are never God’s denials.
If you’re waiting on one of God’s promises right now, I’ve created a free printable filled with faith-building Bible verses to help you keep your eyes on His promises instead of your circumstances.
