Are you facing a problem in your life that is so big it seems like a giant?
Perhaps that problem is an addiction or a bad habit you’re struggling to break. Maybe your giant is a toxic relationship or a wrong influence.
Perhaps your giant is a negative self-talk, self-hatred, or a mind that needs to be renewed by God’s Word.
We all have those giants in our lives that stand up tall and mock us, just like Goliath mocked David.
And just like David slew Goliath, you can slay the giants in your life with this one powerful tool.

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why did David choose five smooth stones when he only needed one?”
In 2 Samuel 21, we see that David didn’t choose five stones by accident. He wasn’t carrying 5 stones with him in case he missed Goliath the first time.
He had those five stones for an important reason.
We know the Bible mentions these minor details, like the fact that he chose exactly five stones, because later it will reveal the reason.
The verse doesn’t say, “David picked up a few stones” or “David picked up some stones”.
In 1 Samuel 17:40 we read, “Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherdโs bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand.”
In 1 Samuel, we saw that David used one of those stones to kill Goliath, so we know that he had 4 stones left over.
Why? We find the reason in 2 Samuel 21:20.
Yet again there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to the giant. So when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, Davidโs brother, killed him. These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.
Goliath had four brothers.
David chose five smooth stones for five giants from Gath – Goliath and his four brothers.
I believe that when David chose those five stones, he had no idea that Goliath had four brothers, but God knew and immediately prepared him for victory.
How To Slay the Giants In Your Life
Every one of us has our giants against whom we must fight, and God has already prepared us for victory.
In fact, God has already won the battle. We simply need to move forward in the faith and power of the Holy Spirit, knowing that we are already victorious in the name of Jesus Christ.
But there was another giant in David’s life.
David had killed all five of the giants of Gath, but an even greater enemy blinded him from seeing a sixth giant. That giant was immorality.
In 2 Samuel 11, we read the well-known tale of David and Bathsheba.
While David was walking on the roof of his house, he saw Bathsheba bathing, and he was attracted to her. So, he sent his servant to bring her to him.
We know that he was aware that she was married, because in the 3rd verse it says,“So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someonesaid, โIs this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?โ
Nevertheless, the servant brought her to David, and he slept with her, and from there arose a huge problem; Bathsheba became pregnant.
Her husband was in battle, so when the baby was born, he would know that it wasn’t his, and Bathsheba would tell him everything.
David had a huge problem on his hands.
Remember, she didn’t come to David. Verse 4 says, “Then David sent messengers, and took her…”
This wasn’t a steamy affair between David and Bathsheba. Women didn’t have their own rights, and because David was the king, Bathsheba was obligated to obey his command.
In order to hide his sin, David came up with a plan. Uriah must die, and Bathsheba must become his wife.
We know how the story ends.
David sends Uriah to his death on the front lines, he takes Bathsheba to be his wife, and God, through the prophet, reveals David’s sin.
Lately, we have read too many stories of pastors and Christian leaders who have fallen into sin, one after another, and most often in the area of sexual immorality.
When we read these stories, they shock us. They disturb us. They grieve our hearts. But one thing is for certain.
People do not fall into sin overnight.
A powerful man doesn’t just fall in a moment. There is, for certain, an unseen area of weakness in his life that has been left unchecked and unattended to.
And that’s what we see in David’s story.
While we don’t know where or how that sin began in his life, we read in 2 Samuel 11:1, “It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.”
Where should David have been? Not in Jerusalem.
Rather than going to war in times when kings go out to battle, he sent Joab and his servants and all Israel.
Everyone who should have gone went, but David stayed home.
We don’t know why, but if there had been a good reason for him to stay in Jerusalem, surely the Bible would have told us.
Dear sister, I have two questions for you.
- Who are your giants?
- Have you slain your giants?
If you haven’t slain your giants and are asking yourself right now, “How do I slay them”? The answer is simple: Go and do the last thing the Lord told you to do.
What is the last thing God has told you to do? Have you done it yet?
If you haven’t, you can’t move forward until you have. Disobedience left unchecked in our hearts will only feed our giant and help him grow.
James 4:17 says, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
We cannot and will not walk in victory as long as we entertain sin in our hearts. Victory comes when we take the first step to walk in obedience to God’s Word.
If you are ready to slay your giants, make the choice that you will obey God fully every time no matter the cost.
This is the only way you can slay the giants in your life.

Your post made me smile, Rosilind. You are so correct about the giants David needed to defeat in his own life. We are so quick to see our victories that sometimes we neglect to work on our real giants.
Yes, so true!
Hello Rosilind,
Thank you for sharing the new group, just wondering what book you will start on 19th June because I don’t want to clash.I’ll be doing Romans at that time.
About King David,
It’s true that his immorality did not start overnight.I noticed that by the time he was anointed as King,he already had several wives(5-6),then later on in Jerusalem he got many more wives and concubines. So,he loved women, and he wasn’t getting satisfied with the ones he had.His lack of not getting satisfied led him to sin.He lacked the skill of taming his appetite. This is terrible cause,he could not spare someone’s wife.
On the 19th we will be doing a translated version of my new study 10 Days to a Fruitful Life. You are free to do anything you’d like during this break. I love what you had to say about David.
Sounds great, and short.I will join you for the study hoping to be more fruitful after the study, thank you.
Wonderful! I am glad you’d love to join us!
Thanks again. Every morning you are one of the things I do when I read my e-mail devotionals first and than your site. I am 65 five years old I have learned a lot from you. I value your intelligence. I am so teachable now it’s funny. It reminds of a time I meet Jesus face to face but not allowed to talk to hi, My mother stooped I had my arms open and I was not afraid. Maybe he had a purpose for me. Not hearing the purpose God had for my life. I just wanted to share a little of myself. It is hard for me trust male or female because of all the trauma in my life have I received. May God Bless you with propensity so can serve his kingdom. Your sister in Christ
Wow – thank you!! Your encouragement today made my day.
