All of us feel lonely at times.

And while we are a culture that is interconnected in ways never before seen in history, we are more lonely today than ever.

How ironic is it that our friends – even those who live hundreds and thousands of miles away – are literally at our fingertips at all times, and yet we are deeply and desperately lonely?

I have been lonely often in my life.

I am an odd combination of introvert and extrovert; and have most often felt like a square peg in a round hole. I was never really into what my friends were into.

Hard as I tried, I just never really got the appeal of being “in love” with movie stars and the obsession with teen magazines.

I craved adult conversation and wanted a much deeper connection than my peers did.

Even as an adult, I have often found myself lonely. I have friends, even best friends; but as life often does, it seems when life goes sideways for me, my friends are very often up to their ears in their own life.

And it’s in these moments when I have to remind myself of three things to avoid falling into the enemy’s trap.

1. Don’t make an idol out of your friends

It is tempting to expect that our friends will be there for us whenever we need; that they will just drop everything going on in their life to meet our unexpected need.

And when they don’t, it can feel lonely for us. We can even become bitter about it (more on that in point 2).

However, this expectation is unreasonable on our part, and places on our friends a greater burden than they were meant to bear.

When we expect from our friends to meet a need that only Christ can meet, we make an idol out of them.

2. Avoid self-pity

Another temptation we face when feeling lonely despite having friends is fall into a pit of self-pity.

We begin meditating on all of the ways we’ve been there for them more than they’ve been there for us. Suddenly, the friendship seems very one-sided.

The thing we need to remember is, hindsight isn’t always 20/20. Especially when we’re in a pit of self-pity. Self-pity distorts history in big ways, and usually spins the narrative in our favor.

Allowing our hearts to be overcome with self-pity is a sure-fire way to destroy friendships, and that’s exactly what the enemy has come to do.

Steal, kill, and destroy.

Recognize this trap for what it is, and run from it!

3. Turn to Jesus for comfort and peace

In point one, I warned not to make an idol out of our friends.

The reason why I used the word “idol” is because we often expect from our friends what only Christ can give.

  • Christ is there for us 24/7
  • Christ will never leave us nor forsake us
  • Christ is with us immediately when we call

I truly believe that there are times when I go through a crisis at the very moment when those closest to me are either in their own crises or when life has become very busy for them, so that I learn to lean on Christ more.

So that I learn to take my unreasonable expectations off of their shoulders and place the full weight of my burdens at the feet of Jesus.

And it’s in these times that I turn to the verses below for comfort and strength…finding a place of intimacy with Christ that I’ve never had before.
