How seriously do we consider God’s laws today?

When God gave us His Word, did He take into account what our culture would be like today:

  • The rampant immorality
  • The level of soft porn we see all around us
  • The hook up culture on college campuses
  • The amount of fornication portrayed by Hollywood

Maybe today’s culture is just really different from what the culture was like back then.

Or maybe it’s not!

When God instructed Noah to build the ark, the Bible says that “every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.” (Genesis 6:5)

This was a culture that could only think of doing evil; they were incapable of thinking anything righteous.

God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because not the men in that city think nothing of homosexual gang rape, or rape at all (Lot offering his virgin daughters to the men to rape).

At other various times in Scripture, we see cultures that glorified polygamy, temple prostitution, rampant immorality, incest, and other sexually deviant behavior.

Even Paul had to address the Corinthian church for letting immorality slide on such a level that wasn’t even seen in the world. (1 Corinthians 5:1-2)

So clearly, our culture is not unique in it’s level of sexual obsession and God’s Word wasn’t addressing a culture unlike the one we live in today.

God’s Commands Are Eternal and His Word is Established Forever

When addressing the topic of sexual abstinence until marriage, I find many Christian parents incredulous and even in disbelief that this is possible.

The pervading belief is that we must come to accept that everyone “slips up”, and that our kids will likely engage in sexual behavior before marriage.

Therefore, the responsible thing to do as parents is to educate them about safe sex.

Nowhere in God’s Word do we see any other “safe sex” addressed than abstinence, and the Scripture has a lot to say about that.

In fact, the Word of God has very strong words addressing those who engage in immoral behavior:

  • Fornication (sex outside of marriage)
  • Adultery (extramarital affairs)
  • Sodomy (homosexuality)
  • Other deviant behaviors (incest, bestiality, etc)

“Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, who are idol worshipers, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, abusers, and swindlers–none of these will have a share in the Kingdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Emphasis Mine

Note: This verse is addressing those who willfully and habitually walk in sexual sin.

There is big difference between Christians who make a wrong choice, repent, and take actionable steps to correct their behavior, while openly and humbly acknowledging that their behavior was sinful and displeasing to God, and those who willfully and habitually sin without any remorse or change of behavior.

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.” 1 John 1:5-6

No one who lives in him [God] keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.” 1 John 3:6,9

10 Bible Verses for Moral Purity

God’s Word is clear, if we truly know God and if we are born again – born of God – we will not continually to willfully sin.

And if this is true, then it is also true that Christian young people, who are born again and passionate about living for Christ, can live lives of purity and sexual abstinence until marriage.

Not only are they able to do this, they are commanded to do this!

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” Colossians 3:5

1. Matthew 5:27

“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

2.  Matthew 5:8

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

3. 1 Timothy 4:12

“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

4. James 1:27

“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: …to keep oneself unspotted from the world.”

5. Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

6. Psalm 119:9

“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.”

7. Romans 13:14

“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”

8. Galatians 5:16

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

9. 1 Corinthians 6:18, 20

“Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

10. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God.”
