If you’re new to Christianity, or if you’ve been away from church for a long time, you may hear big words thrown around that sound confusing.

Maybe you don’t even know what they mean.

One of those words might be sanctification.

We see this word several times throughout the Bible, especially in the Old Testament in the first 5 books of the Bible when God was giving the Law and instructions to the children of Israel in the desert.

This is very important to understand, especially realizing why God was leading the children of Israel out of Egypt and into the desert.

That whole story is a picture – a real-life depiction – if our own salvation.

Their slavery in Egypt is a picture of our slavery in sin.

Moses’ battle with Pharaoh is a picture of the spiritual battle for our souls.

Leaving Egypt is a depiction of our conversion experience – God setting us free from sin.

They encountered the Red Sea, Pharaoh and his army on one side of them, the foreboding Red Sea on the other side of them – very much how after we’re saved, the enemy wants to cause us to doubt our salvation.

But God, through His miraculous hand, caused the Red Sea to part and they walked across the Sea on dry ground.

Entering a desert, where they would learn how to walk and live in a way that was pleasing to God, just as our Christian walk isn’t easy.

We have to learn to live and walk in a way that pleases Him!

During this time, God gave them a very specific Law that included a lot of words like holy, sanctify, consecrate – many of which are in the context of the cleansing and sacrificial laws that Christ fulfilled on the cross – and therefore do not apply to us today (because they are fulfilled through Christ’s work on the cross).

God was creating an entire nation of people who would be completely set apart for holy use.

However, we read how over and over they rejected God and finally were carried off into captivity to Assyria and Babylon.

While they eventually returned to Israel, God finally sent His Son Jesus Christ as the final sacrifice for our sins – thereby enabling anyone, everywhere….Jew or Gentile… to become holy, sanctified, and consecrated for His use.

But what does this mean?

These three words – holy, sanctify, consecrate – can be used interchangeably to mean that we, as children of God, have a special purpose.

We are not for ordinary use.

Just like my wedding dress. I don’t wear it to clean the house, go grocery shopping, or fold the laundry. It has a very special use.

To wear it to do ordinary, everyday tasks would diminish it’s value and meaning.

When we are saved, God sanctifies us for a specific purpose and calling, and that calling is to separate ourselves from the world and live differently than those around us.

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light

1 Peter 2:9

But this isn’t something we do on our own. It isn’t something we can make happen by choices we make to follow a list of things we do or don’t do.

Any effort of our own to accomplish sanctification in our lives is like a 3 year old trying to copy a Rembrandt.

Only God, by the power of His Holy Spirit can accomplish sanctification in our lives.

And it is a process, and will be a process we will go through for the rest of our lives.

Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Philippians 1:6
