3 Reasons the Bible Gives Us for Christian Meditation

Do you struggle with fear,  anxiety, or panic attacks?

Do you feel depressed or like your mind and thoughts are often under attack?

Are you weighed down with feelings of failure and a need for wisdom?

The Christian community deals with these kinds of problems all of the time, and most do not realize that the answer to these problems isn’t just right under our nose, or even on our book shelves.

The Scriptures clearly instruct us in what we are to do in these difficult instances.

3 Reasons the Scriptures Give Us for Christian Meditation

1. God’s Word tells us that meditation gives us peace.

“My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.” Proverbs 4:20-21

Philippians 4:8 instructs us this way:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

When we are feeling anxiety, stress, fear or even depression; it is because we have our focus off of our Savior and on the troubles of our life or the cares of this world.

If we take time out of our day to meditate on God, his goodness, and what scripture tells us about who God is, and who we are in Him; we will find that we, over time, begin retraining our thought processes.

Isaiah 26:3 says it this way: “You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You…”

2. God’s Word tells us that meditation makes us successful.

Part of why people experience anxiety and worry is because they are afraid of not succeeding. However, success is guaranteed to the person that  meditates on the Word of God.

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8

When we meditate on God’s Word and our thought processes begin to change; our attitudes about ourselves, about life, our approach to business and our employers changes as well.

In these very things lies the secret to true success!

3. God’s Word tells us that meditation makes us wise.

Once our thought processes and attitudes begin to change it is apparent to all of those around us that we are developing wisdom in our lives.

David said it this way in Psalms 119:97-99 “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes.”

James also instructed us to ask of God if we need wisdom because he gives it to all men liberally.

If we need wisdom, we need but meditate on (think on, mull over) the Word of God for in it lies all wisdom!

So the next time you are seized by panic or feel a wave of depression sweeping over you… next time you fear failure, or don’t know what decision is the right one; turn to Scripture.

Seek out what the Word of God says about your situation, meditate on who God is and who you are as his child. As Paul said to the Church in Philippi: Think on these things!
