Did you know that the Bible has a lot of verses about wasting time?
We live in a culture where time-saving has become a great irony because while we have many resources, tools, and apps that help us save time, we also have a phone that has become our greatest tool for wasting time.
If you’ve ever wanted to track how much time you waste on your phone, you have a Digital Wellbeing option under your settings that tracks how much time you actively spend on your phone.
It is a dire revelation to us as to how tied we are to it.

This is why I have created the 5-Day Challenge for Controlling Your Social Media. I encourage you to join that challenge.
In the 5-Day Challenge for Controlling Your Social Media, we:
- Take inventory of the platforms we use
- Identify how we use these platforms and if we really need them
- Begin setting boundaries around the ones we choose to keep
You can learn more about it here.
Today, I want us to look at what the Bible says about how we should spend our time.
10 Bible Verses About Wasting Time
1. Ephesians 5:15-16
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
2. Ecclesiastes 3:1, 11
To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.
3. Psalm 119:15
I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways.
4. Colossians 4:5
Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.
5. Psalm 90:12
So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
6. James 4:14
Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
7. Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
8. Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
9. Psalm 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
10. Colossians 3:2
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
How are you spending your time currency?
In Matthew 25, Jesus told a parable about a master who went out on a journey but first gave each of his three servants a sum of money.
In the parable, Jesus calls them talents.
Those weren’t gifts and abilities but a type of currency.
Two of the servants invested their gift and earned more. One buried his and earned nothing.
The one who earned nothing was thrown out, and his talent was given to the first servant.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the expression we use is spending time.
Just like with money, we invest our time and either receive a benefit or lose an opportunity, all depending on our choice of investment.
Dear friends, social media is a poor time investment.
It’s time to take our time back so we can invest it wisely and in a way that glorifies Jesus!
