My brother was a runner.

He and my dad used to run 10Ks together a lot. My mom and sister and I would stand on the sidelines, cheering them on, and then watch my brother get a medal at the finish line.

He always took first – even when he was the youngest in his category.

My brother was a really great runner. He was fast and he had really great form and technique.

One thing he shared with us about running was that at some point during the race you hit a wall. It’s a wall of exhaustion that whispers in your ear that it’s time to stop, catch your breath, a rest a bit.

The thing about this wall is that it lies to you.

A good runner will run through that wall, knowing that on the other side is a euphoria that will carry you through to the end.

In fact, he said that after he broke through the wall, he felt like he could run forever.

However, if you listen to that wall and stop for a bit to catch your breath, you won’t get going again. You’ll just give up.

Every good runner has a technique they’ve developed to break through that wall. For my brother it was a monster face. We have several snapshots of him with that face “scaring away the wall”.

Paul referred to our Christian walk as a race, and I can testify to the fact that many times in this race of my Christian walk, I’ve hit a wall.

I’ve hit walls of:

Pain
Disappointment
Disillusionment
Hurt
Sickness
Chronic illness
Doubt
Fear
Anxiety
Discouragement

Walls that have whispered in my ear that I needed to stop for a bit, catch my breath…

Walls that have tempted me to ease up on my standards, have a little fun and compromise a bit, not take this Christian life so seriously.

These walls are built on Satan’s lies!
