The Power of Jesus Being Your Satisfaction

Have you ever stopped to think about the words we sing for worship, and if you really live like you believe them?

I have.

One phrase that I have found that I say or sing often, but still haven’t fully lived out is “You are all I need.”

It is true, Jesus is all I need. But do I live like He’s all I need?

After John the Baptist baptized Jesus, He went into the wilderness.

Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
Luke 4:1-3

Jesus came back with a very interesting reply. He quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ “

Do we really know the depth of what Jesus was saying?

Man shall not live by bread alone

Bread satisfies our physical hunger, but not for long. Soon, we will be hungry again.

But physical hunger isn’t our only hunger.

We have soul hunger. We have spiritual hunger.

These three appetites war in us, demanding our attention. Do we know how to satisfy them in a way that glorifies God?

Many people try to satisfy their hunger with

Food
Alcohol
Drugs
Sleep
Sex
Gambling
Shopping
Work
Social media
Escaping into movies or book
Projects

There are millions of ways people find to quench their physical, soul, and spiritual hunger, but it doesn’t last.

Any satisfaction apart from Christ will constantly demand more, and more, and more…

God gave us physical bread to give our bodies the nutrients and energy it needs to function, not as a way to satisfy the deeper hunger we have for significance, meaning, and satisfaction.

Because those needs will never truly be met apart from Christ!

But by every word of God

There is a lot of significance in this statement that is most often missed.

Do we recognize the sovereign authority of God’s Word?

By His word, He created the Universe and everything that exists.

By His word he healed, raised the dead, and cast out demons.

God’s Word has all authority, and therefore by His word we have everything we need to satisfy our deepest needs.

That is why David could say, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”

He had need of nothing because he had found his deepest satisfaction in God.

Peter was able to say,

Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2 Peter 1:2-4 – Emphasis mine

Paul was able to be content in whatever state he was in (Philippians 4:11).
