Verses and Questions for the Day:
Monday: Psalm 139:17-18

Did you know that God thinks about you? He does, and He thinks about you all day long. In fact, you are never out of God’s thoughts – not even for a moment! Perhaps this idea frightens you, because you’re afraid that God’s thoughts of you are critical or negative. Jeremiah 29:11 assures us, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” God’s thoughts of us are good thoughts, thoughts of peace -not negative or condemning. The enemy wants you to think that God’s thoughts about you are critical and negative, because he wants to keep you living less than what God has planned for your life. But God, in His Word, assures us that not only are God’s thoughts about us are good and loving thoughts, but they are so numerous that we can’t even begin to count them. Even when we’re sleeping, He is thinking of us, “When I awake, I am still with You.” He hasn’t stopped thinking of you, even when you’re sleeping. What does this mean to you right now? If you grew up in a home with critical, judgmental, distant, or perfectionist parents, it may be hard for you to comprehend a Father who cherishes and loves you this much. But God wants you to know Him in this way. Take some time today to write out and meditate on Ephesians 3:14-19. This passage assures us that comprehending the 4-dimensional nature of God’s love will root and ground us. We will be firmly established on an unshakable foundation. That is what God wants for you.
Tuesday: Psalm 139:19-20

David suddenly changes directions from his amazement of God’s love and care for him to a holy anger aimed at God’s enemies. These verses may seem out of place in this Psalm, but when we consider that those whom David describe in this verse speak death to the life God cherishes, we realize that these verses actually fit perfectly with David’s prayer. Proverbs 18:21 says that the tongue has the power of life and death. James 3 calls the tongue “a world of iniquity” and goes on to say that it defiles the whole body. We have to be careful about how we use our tongue. David says, “For they speak against You wickedly; Your enemies take Your name in vain.” Do we feel the same righteous anger toward those who speak against God and take His name in vain? Or do we tolerate it? How much do we allow these wicked people to entertain us through TV, movies, or other media? Do we cry out, “Depart from me!” or do we passively allow them room in our lives? Exodus 20:7 says, “For the Lord shall not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” Are you guilty by association? If you have been too tolerant of the wicked, pray today and ask the Lord to forgive you, and then ask the Lord to show you were you need to raise your standard of righteousness so that you learn to hate sin in the same way He hates sin.
Wednesday: Psalm 139:21-22

We must remember that David lived and wrote this Psalm before Jesus came and gave His life as a sacrifice for the world. While God is angry and against His enemies every day, He is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 His desire is that the wicked repent of their sin and spend eternity with Him. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” So, our hatred isn’t of people, but of the demonic powers that are animating people. God loves people, and we should love them the way He loves them. However, while we love people, we must not allow our love to become permissive and tolerant of sin. Sadly, the church has allowed the phrase, “love the sinner, hate the sin” to make them permissive and tolerant of those things that God hates. God hates sin. He loathes sin. He wants us to hate sin as much as He hates sin because sin separates man from Him for eternity. Have you been guilty of being too permissive of sin? Or do find yourself “wrestling against flesh and blood”, forgetting that the person you are wrestling is lost and in need of a Savior? Take some time today and ask the Lord to fill your heart with His love for people, so that you see them with God’s eyes. Also, ask Him to fill your heart with a “perfect hatred” of sin, so that you hate sin the same way He hates sin.
Thursday: Psalm 139:23

As David wraps up this Psalm, he invites God to examine his heart. Culture tells us “follow your heart”, but Jeremiah 17:9 warns us that “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” God is the only one who can know our heart, because if we follow our heart, it will deceive us and lead us down the wrong path. This is why we need God’s Word, because it is the mirror by which we can see God’s holiness and our humanity side-by-side. It reminds us that we should not compare ourselves with the world. We shouldn’t even compare ourselves with other Christians. We compare ourselves with Christ’s perfection. How often do you allow God to search your heart? How often do you allow Him to try you, and know your anxieties? This should be our daily prayer. If a builder’s measurements are even a millimeter off, it can cause catastrophic damage to the building. Imagine if an engineer designs a bridge with just the slightest error in his calculations. Measurements are searched and tested repeatedly to ensure that everything is calculated with perfect precision. This is how we should live our lives. Allowing God to search us and test us daily, so that we live our lives bathed and saturated in the perfection of God’s work and the blood of Jesus.
Friday: Psalm 139:24

I find it so interesting that David wrote this Psalm before Jesus came, sacrificed His own life, and purchased for us everlasting life. He says, “And lead me in the way everlasting”. Somehow, even then, he knew that following God’s ways would lead to everlasting life. Even a hint of wickedness will defile our whole lives. This is why we must allow God to daily search our hearts because even a speck of wickedness left unchecked will become a disease that will infect our spirit. James said, “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.” James 1:14-16.
He goes on to say, “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.” James 2:10 God’s law isn’t made of up many parts. God’s law is complete. It’s whole. So that if we break His law, we’ve broken the whole thing – and we are now a convicted sinner. We are guilty. This is why wickedness in our life left unchecked will infect our whole spirit. But when we come before our loving Father God each and every day and we allow His loving eyes to search us and know us, He will lovingly and graciously point out areas of our life that do not measure up to His law. Not to condemn us. Not to shame us. But to restore us, cleanse us, and lead us in the way everlasting! How has this Psalm changed the way you view God? Do you see Him as your loving Father who enjoys being with you and who delights in you? Are you able to come into His presence without shame? Do you feel comfortable allowing Him to search your heart thoroughly?
