Verses and Questions for the Day:
Monday: Psalm 139:1-2

David begins this Psalm by establishing God’s attribute of omniscience. He knows everything about us. He has searched us, and He has known us (these are past tense). He knows all our actions and thoughts. He uses the phrase “You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thoughts afar off” to illustrate that God sees our most mundane, everyday actions and my thoughts before they are even formed.
What kind of feeling do these verses evoke in you, knowing that God knows every detail about you, He sees every action of every part of your day, and He knows your thoughts before you even think them? Does it make you feel uncomfortable? Loved? Cherished?
Tuesday: Psalm 139:3

The Hebrew word for “comprehend” in this verse is Zara and it means to spread or to fan out. It reminds me of the verse in Romans 8:38-39, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
There is nothing in this life that is stronger than God’s love. His presence surrounds our path and our lying down: it surrounds us day and night. Dear sister, you are never outside the cloud of God’s love and presence. Take a moment today to reflect on the fact that God’s presence and love surrounds you like a soft cloud and never leaves you, then thank God for that love and presence in your life.
Wednesday: Psalm 139:4

Does this verse make you cringe a little? It makes me cringe to think that before I even speak, God already knows my words completely. He knows not only the words I speak, but the spirit in which I speak them. Jesus said in Matthew 12:36, “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.” Yesterday we reflected on the cloud of God’s love that surrounds us day and night, but we should not let today’s verse cause us to shrink back from that love. Dear sister, remember that God’s love surrounds you even when the words you speak are not God-honoring words. However, knowing that God is intimately acquainted with our words even before we speak them, should remind us to stop and consider our words before they are spoken and ask God to change our thoughts so that our words always honor Him. This is called “renewing our mind”. When our minds are renewed, our thoughts change. And when our thoughts change, our words change. How do your thoughts and words need a change today? Does this verse make you rethink the words you speak each day?
Thursday: Psalm 139:4

“You have hedged me” means to fortify or to secure and shut in. We are completely secured and encapsulated in God’s presence. There is nothing that can reach us that doesn’t go through Him first. Then, David says, “And laid Your hand upon me.” So, not only are we completely protected by God’s presence, but He has laid His hand of blessing upon us, just like a parent places their loving hand on their child’s head to assure them that they are near.
Has there ever been a time when you didn’t feel God’s presence in your life? Has there ever been a time when you felt God had abandoned you? Maybe you’re asking yourself, “If God has encapsulated me in His protection, why have bad things happened to me?” God never allows a situation in our life without a purpose, and He wants you to know and understand that purpose. Instead of asking, “why,” ask Him “what”. “God, what do you want to show me through this situation? What do you want to do in and through my life in this circumstance?” God’s ways are always loving and perfect. And His promise is that He will turn all things for our good.
Friday: Psalm 139:6

As David meditated on these thoughts, he finally exclaims, “Such knowledge is too huge for me to comprehend! I can’t even begin to understand what all this means!” God knows us better than we know ourselves. Our perception of ourselves is very distorted. We are prone to be both overly critical and overly lenient about ourselves, but God sees us perfectly as we are.
This is even more wonderful if God has forgiven your sins, because He doesn’t even see your past. He only sees the perfect blood of Jesus that has washed away all your sins. He sees Christ’s perfection in you instead of your human flaws. But, we must also remember, He sees today’s actions. He sees today’s motives behind our actions. He sees and fully understands ever tendency we have to manipulate and selfishly get our own way. That is why Jeremiah 17:9 warns, “The heart is deceitful above all things, desperately wicked: who can know it?” We need to be cautious and not take advantage of God’s wonderful love and presence in our lives. How does Psalm 139:1-6 change the way you view God’s presence and working in your life? Has it made you more aware of His protection and love?
