Verses and Questions for the Day:
Monday: Psalm 139:7

Have you ever felt so alone that it seemed even God had left you? Have you had moments in your life when it felt God was far away and completely uninvolved in your life? When we have periods like that in our lives, we can know that our feelings are not telling us the truth, because the answer to David’s question is found in Deuteronomy 31:8, “And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”
There have been those who have said, “It wasn’t God who left you, it was you who left God. But according to Psalm 139:5, we can’t leave God. His presence always surrounds us. It is our sense of God’s presence that becomes dull, like a callous that builds on our skin when something continually irritates us. Sin is an irritant to our spirit and if we allow sin to continue to irritate our spirit, a callous will grow and we will not only stop feeling the irritation of sin, we will also stop feeling the closeness of God’s presence.
Have you developed a callous in your spirit because of sin? Take a moment today to pray and ask God to forgive you for that sin and then begin taking steps to walk away from that sin. Allow God to develop a sensitivity to His presence again.
Tuesday: Psalm 139:8-9

The wonderful, godly woman Betsie ten Boom once said, “There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.” Indeed, she knew about deep pits. She and her sister were sent to the dreaded Ravensbrück concentration camp during World War II. Just before she died in her sister’s arms in that horrible pit, she uttered those words to Corrie. Maybe you feel that you are in a pit so deep that even God can’t see you. But, you see, God could see Corrie, even in Ravensbrück, because 12 days after Betsie whispered those words to Corrie, she was released on a clerical error. She should have been sent to the gas chamber, but God saw her – even there. It doesn’t matter how deep and dark your pit may seem, God is there with you. It doesn’t matter how far you try to run from God; He is with you. Jonah found this out when he was thrown from the ship on which he was foolishly trying to escape God’s call. As he sunk deeper and deeper into the sea during a storm of supernatural proportions, God was with him – even there. We may not see His hand or feel His presence with us in those moments when life’s pit seems so deep that even God can’t reach us. This is where faith and trust are important. It is in these moments that trust in God’s promises anchor us to the truth that God has never – and will never – leave us nor forsake us. If you are questioning whether God was with you in a past trauma or circumstance, or whether He is with you now, take some time today to meditate on today’s verses and on the promise in Deuteronomy 31:8. Ask God to help you trust in His promise that no matter where life takes us, He is always with us.
Wednesday: Psalm 139:10

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” Why does a child die of cancer? Why does a mother die in childbirth? Why are some babies born with disabilities? Why does God allow war and suffering, poverty and crippling disease? Today’s verse may make us wonder all the more when we read that even in the depths of a deep, dark pit, “…even there Your hand shall lead me….” Would God really lead me to that?
David said in Psalm 23:4, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me.” We see evidence of God’s hand leading people through dark times: Joseph was led by God into prison. The children of Israel were led by God into the wilderness to wander for 40 years. David was led by God as he encountered years of fleeing from Saul. Job was led by God through the trauma of losing everything – even his children and health. The three Hebrew children were led by God right into the fiery furnace. God never promised a detour around trouble, but He has promised that when we go through trouble, it will not destroy us because He is with us. Can trouble destroy God? Of course not! And He will not allow your trouble to destroy you because His hand is leading you. His right hand is holding you. Trust in His hand as He leads you through to victory on the other side.
Thursday: Psalm 139:11-12

1 John 1:5 says, “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” We don’t have to fear the dark times in life when God is in us, because He brings light to our darkness. Darkness is defined as the absence of light. When darkness begins to close in around us, it is illuminated by God’s light because God and darkness cannot exist together. God’s light will shine in the darkness. This is why David says, “The darkness and the light are both alike to You.” However, when we allow sin to dwell in our lives, we block God’s light. This doesn’t mean God’s light isn’t shining, but it does mean that His light is being blocked by the darkness we are allowing into our lives, just like the walls in our home prevent the light from one room to shine all over the house. Is there something in you have allowed into your life that is blocking God’s light in your life? Are you ready to tear down the walls of in your life that prevent God’s light from shining brightly in and through you?
Friday: Psalm 139:13-16

Science teaches that conception happens when an egg and sperm meet, but the Bible tells us that it is God who forms us in our mother’s womb. If life happened only biologically, we would not have a soul and spirit. God’s work must be present for a soul and spirit to be formed. This is what separates us from all other life forms on earth, particularly the animal kingdom. What is even more amazing is verse 16, “And in Your book they [our days] all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.” Your life was already written in God’s book before you were ever born. This is how much God cares about you. Perhaps you have been told that you were an accident, the “oops” child; but God planned you! He planned you before you were ever conceived and His holy hands formed every part of you. You have worth and value. God created you for a specific purpose that only you can fulfill. Do you know that purpose How do these verses change how you see yourself and your life? In what way do they strengthen your self-worth and value? If you haven’t yet discovered your purpose, ask Him to reveal that to you today. James promises that if we ask for wisdom, God will give it to us. He wants you to know and walk in your purpose.
