Without a doubt, the film War Room has made an enormous impact on the church and has reminded us of the importance of prayer.
For many prayer went beyond it being rote words or a plea sent upward when we’re in trouble to being a well thought out strategy and a discipline that grows in our lives as we grow in Christ.
After watching the movie War Room, I wanted to have that private place to go where I could daily meet with God.
The only problem was, our house was small and every room was considered a living area. Four people in 800 square feet just doesn’t leave any space for extra room. So I had to get creative.
In this post When You Don’t Have Room For a War Room I talk about how I got creative with my war room.
As I’ve followed this topic more closely, I’ve seen even more fun and creative ideas for creating a War Room when you don’t have extra room in your home to dedicate just to prayer.
5 Alternatives To a War Room {When You Don’t Have Room}
1. A Wall
You can get very creative with this idea; from a shabby chick inspiration or vision board to painting a wall with chalkboard paint. You can use a wall in your bedroom, bathroom, laundry room, or pantry – like my wall pictured below.
On your wall you can frame verses that have meant a lot to your spiritual life and hang pictures of family, friends, and missionaries you’re praying for – so that it still looks decorative, but serves as a reminder to pray and intercede.
2. Back of a door
I loved this idea so much that I just went and did it. My door perpendicular to the wall pictured above in my pantry. When I open my door, no one sees my War Room, so it really is like a secret prayer closet that Jesus talked about in Matthew 6. It’s multi-functional, serving as my pantry but also as my meeting place with God.
You could use the back of your bedroom door, bedroom door, or even closet door.
3. Fridge
This is also a very creative idea. You could easily personalize your prayer room with your fridge by buying magnet sheets and gluing verses, pictures, and inspirational quotes to them and arranging them on your fridge to create a constant reminder to pray always.
4. Notebook or binder
This was my original idea, and I loved it so much. I still use my prayer notebook often, as it seems to be the most natural way for me to pray.
It is the most practical way to have a war room when you don’t have room in your house to create a place dedicated to prayer needs.
Using dividers, you can create different sections for different prayer areas: such as personal prayer needs, prayer journaling, and other’s needs.
5. Prayer cards
Even more simpler than a War Room notebook or binder is prayer cards. They are so easy to use and versatile. You can easily slip them in your pocket or purse and take them with you.
I personally like to go prayer walking. I just slip my prayer cards in my pocket and go for a walk, using the prayer cards to remind me of the specific needs I’m praying for.
I like to use index cards, and you can easily keep them organized by using an index card box.
I created these pocket prayer cards to make your whole house a war room by praying specific prayers over each part of your home.
Don’t let lack of space in your home discourage you from having a powerful and exciting prayer life!
